There’s nothing I enjoy more than speaking with highly capable IT professionals about their next career moves. I love hearing about their ideas, aspirations, and the types of roles they’re aiming to secure. It’s a conversation that energises me, as I get to connect with people who are not just technically skilled, but also ambitious and driven.
But I’ll be honest – this year has been tinged with sadness. I’ve spoken with so many incredibly talented and efficient individuals who, quite frankly, I’m amazed are still looking for their next opportunity. These are the sorts of people who should have multiple offers on the table, yet the market has left them waiting.
A Competitive Market, But We’re Still Busy
It’s not all doom and gloom. We currently have a wide range of vacancies and are regularly approached by companies that need specialist talent or a unique technical edge. In fact, we often operate as that go-to partner when businesses need something a little more refined, a bit more niche.
One recent client comment really stuck with me. They referred to us as “the Waitrose of recruitment.” I took it as a genuine compliment. While some recruitment partners may offer a lower-cost model, this client was quick to point out that our service, attention to detail, and ability to deliver exactly what they need is why they value us – and why they don’t want us to alter our pricing just to compete at the lower end. They need what we bring to the table as part of their preferred supplier mix.
So, thank you to them. It reminded me why I do what I do and why quality, especially in recruitment, is worth its weight in gold.
Candid Advice and Real Support
I take pride in the fact that clients trust me enough to introduce me to their network – senior IT professionals, close connections, and valued team members who are in need of guidance for their next step. When these introductions happen, I commit to being brutally honest (but always constructive!). Whether it’s helping reshape a CV, offering interview preparation, or giving frank market insight, my role is to help them stand out and get noticed.
And while I might not have an existing trading relationship with every company out there, my market knowledge often allows me to steer candidates in the right direction, pointing them toward businesses where they can add real value.
Ultimately, my goal is simple: I want to see these individuals land the right roles. Because talent sitting on the sidelines benefits no one.
Why Is It So Tough Right Now?
So why, despite the talent pool being full of exceptional candidates, are we seeing such a slowdown – particularly at senior levels?
In my view, it’s simply the state of the market right now. There’s been caution from businesses, delayed hiring decisions, and a focus on cost control as we’ve entered the year. But these conditions are rarely permanent.
From my conversations and forecasts, I’m optimistic that by April, we’ll start to see momentum shift. Historically, the start of the second quarter brings renewed confidence, new budgets, and teams gearing up for project delivery.
A Final Thought
For now, I’ll continue doing what I do best – supporting top-tier IT professionals and working closely with clients who know that when they need specialist talent, they can trust us to deliver. And when the market does pick up, I know these brilliant people I’m speaking to will be at the front of the queue.
